Cignus to Support the Virginia Air Transportation System Plan Update
February 15, 2021

Cignus will support Mead & Hunt on the Virginia Air Transportation System Plan (VATSP) Update for DOAV, contributing airport inventory analysis, GIS studies, ATC/ATM expertise, and emerging technology assessments including UAS/AAM integration.
Businesses, residents, and visitors depend on Virginia's airports. The Virginia Air Transportation System Plan (VATSP) Update reviews and develops recommendations for the maintenance of existing airports, strategic enhancements to existing facilities and systems, future technology impacts, and the development of new system airports — helping Virginia keep pace with future demand and aviation technologies introduced by NextGen.
Cignus will support Mead & Hunt on the most recent Virginia Air Transportation System Plan Update for the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV). Updated every five years, the VATSP encompasses infrastructure, economic, and operational assessments that shape airport system funding and resource allocation across Virginia.
Cignus's scope of support includes: airport and aviation system inventory data collection and analysis from FAA, DOAV, individual airport, and public data sources; development and analysis of an online survey capturing airport infrastructure, NAVAID, economic impact, emerging technology, and UAS/AAM preparedness data; ATC and ATM subject matter expertise for SWIM and FAA automation integration; GIS analysis and visualization including population drive-time studies, AAM metropolitan access analysis, and airport coverage mapping; assessments of NextGen and emerging technology impacts including Virtual Towers; and operational and economic impact analysis of Urban/Advanced Air Mobility on the Virginia aviation system.
