Bangkok TMA Demand and Capacity Study

International Air Transport Association (IATA)

Cignus analyzed air traffic operations in the Terminal Management Area surrounding Bangkok airports for the International Air Transport Association (IATA), with emphasis on capacity, delay, and safety factors. The Bangkok TMA supports two primary airports: the main international airport (BKK) and the former international airport (DMK).

The study assessed the viability of a single airport operation (closing the old international airport) focusing on airport capacity, airspace complexity, and operational safety. Cignus also developed models of potential fuel savings based on varying capabilities to perform Continuous Descent Approaches across the various alternatives.

Outcomes

  • Demand/capacity analysis for Bangkok TMA dual-airport operations
  • Single vs. dual airport operational feasibility assessment
  • Continuous Descent Approach fuel savings modeling
  • Safety assessment of TMA operations under alternative scenarios
